buddy got hit tonight... just got back from the hospital

Yea so i just got back from the hospital. I got a call from a buddy saying "jon got in an accident" i just about shit my pants as he just bought this honda 600RR 3 days ago(been riding for 4 years but his F4i got stolen). So i grabbed my long board and fuckin flew to where the accident was (on university infront of the dorms).

Well i got there and there was a big group of people watching and i just threw myself up front. Talked with the cop for a min and asked his condition. He had a air cast on his leg and he seemed in good spirits. The paramedics let me in there after explaining my medical backround (lifeguard and certified emt) just to talk to him. So then i argued to go in the ambulance and they let me. So driving to the hospital sirens and all i got the story.

So Jon was traveling east on university. He got stuck at a light in the front. So then when the light turned green he was the first one off. Well 100 yards down the road a 68 year old man traveling westbound decided to make a left hand turn. Well during his turn he saw Jon coming and decided to stop like a deer in headlights entering halfway into Jons lane. Jon tried to slow down and eventually locked up his brakes as he tried to get around front of the car. He got mostly around until the cars front bumper caught the back tire of his bike. It grabbed the tire and lifted up the front of the bike sending Jon slamming into the hood of the car and rolling off the front onto the ground. Thank god he was wearing his helmet or he would be dead. Somewhere in the accident he hit his left leg and broke his Femur.

So got to the hospital and they took him in right away. I was in there as they cut off his pants and all. Then they had the surgen guy drill a rod through his shin. From there they hooked straps up to this rod and pulled away with them and locked them down. What this did is because the clean brake the muscles turned the lower part of the femur and pulled it up towards his pelvis (natural thing muscles do). So the rod pulled the muscles inline but kept them from touching(extreme pain). So now he is all doped up on pain killer (morphine).

In the end a motorcycle cop came to the hospital and explained everything. The old guy guy sited for Failure to Yield and Jon didn't get any tickets.

Tomorrow he is scheduled for surgury to put a rod in his Femur to correct it. Estimated 3-4 months to recover. then i asked him the famed question "will you ride again" only to hear "phuq yea man. once i heal ill be back out"

So he is in good spirits... hes just luck to have had his guardian angel with him...

yea im going to pick up his dad today and look at his bike at the yard... hopefully it isnt too bad. Then he has surgury sometime today and they are putting a rod in his leg...

its funny though because the thing he is most pissed off about is probably not being able to ride for 3-4 months while he recovers...

that is a very disturbing picture of his break. one would think that modern medical science would have came up with a better way to fix a bone than to drill a hole in another bone and yank. ugh....

glad he is okay and that he will still ride. hopefully, his bike wont be too bad. hondas are tanks.

actually it is pretty modern, that's common to do on a clean break, I got a clean break on my left femur...being in traction like that seriously felt good as long as I didn't try to move my leg a lot, just sat there and kinda stretched my muscles, they hung weights off the end of the bed and then put the rod in through my hip a day and a half later. Putting the rod in instead of a cast made me able to go weight bearing up to about 50%, so it was basically how much pain I could tolerate that limited how much weight I could put on it.

I want to stress that physical therapy afterwards will make a HUGE difference in how long it takes him to get going again.

I just got the titanium rod pulled out beginning of december. Phoenix, I'd advise him(when the time comes) to have him take the rod and screws out. weather changes were killin' me, as was any kind of excercise.

glad to hear he's okay and thumped his helmet instead of his skull.
