actually it is pretty modern, that's common to do on a clean break, I got a clean break on my left femur...being in traction like that seriously felt good as long as I didn't try to move my leg a lot, just sat there and kinda stretched my muscles, they hung weights off the end of the bed and then put the rod in through my hip a day and a half later. Putting the rod in instead of a cast made me able to go weight bearing up to about 50%, so it was basically how much pain I could tolerate that limited how much weight I could put on it.
I want to stress that physical therapy afterwards will make a HUGE difference in how long it takes him to get going again.
I just got the titanium rod pulled out beginning of december. Phoenix, I'd advise him(when the time comes) to have him take the rod and screws out. weather changes were killin' me, as was any kind of excercise.
