The Kill..........
Here's a good memory........
The Player:
This was back in 97' when I had my 70' Mach 1.........I had this car for about 8 years then, basically a frame-off resto-mod........
At that time, the car was finished with a 351 SVO dyno'd @ 578 hp, C-6 tranny with Red Line Clutches, reverse valvebody, Coan 4500 stall converter, 9 inch rear with 4.11's, 4-link suspension and the subframes tied & welded. The body was stock, painted white with a Boss 429 hood scoop that was opened up underneath to clear the air cleaner due to using an Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake and a 1000 cfm B&G carb (the whole air cleaner was exposed under the hood scoop). The exhaust was via 2" headers connected to 3" pipe to 2-chamber Flowmasters....the cam was a 620" solid-roller and the compression was 12.5.
The stage:
Michigan, Woodward Ave. & Coolidge Rd. at a McDonald's Cruise-in.
I pull in as I normally do at this cruise-in. (held every Sunday with nearly 200-300 in attendance). Maneuvering towards the back of the parking lot, I see this guy standing next to his Viper.....watching me as I slowly back my car into a parking spot. He walks over.....looks at my car and says "Sounds like you got a real powerhouse in there"......I reply "She's got at lil to her".....He's walking around my car, giving it close scrutiny.....Then he responds..."How'd you think it would do against that" and points to the Viper. (Now mind you, I had already taken my car to Milan Dragway a few months back, where it pulled an 11.2 on steet tires). I gave him a wry smile and said "I don't think I'd have a problem". He then responded "You wanna put up $500 to see?".....I laughed and said "I would except I don't have $500.........All I got is $100"........Then, after a minute he says "I'll go for a $100"....I of course said "OK"........
The Kill:
Well, the word had spread pretty quickly throughout the parking lot regarding the challenge and all the people were lining-up in front of the McDonald's to watch the race. A quick cleaning of the tires and we lined up at the traffic signal on Woodward, the signal was red. He was revving the the crap out of that Viper........I was staging my stall converter....I was in 1st gear at about 3500 RPM.........
I could see the light facing the other direction turning yellow, then red....
I immediately released the brake and floored the accelerator.......My focus was strictly the road ahead of me........My car heaved up and forward, I knew my front tires had left the ground......My foot remained steadfast against the floorboard........2nd gear came real quick and the car started leveling off...........My car was pulling hard........I glanced to the passenger-side and didn't see the Viper.........3rd gear and I was up to around 120 with the Viper about 2 car lengths behind me.......I crossed the next light and slowed to the next turnaround to return to McDonald's.
I backed into my parking spot and had a crowd around me....One of the regulars came up to me and said that my front tires were off the ground by 8-10 inches and that I had the Viper by at least a car length off the line.
The Viper pulls in and parks........it got kinda quiet as the Viper owner walks up........pulls out his wallet and hands me $100 and says "Damn, you must have a big-block in there"..........I replied "Nope, a 351"........He chuckled and walked back to his Viper.......
What a kill..........
