Kahuna
A few days back, the Peebs and I went out to rotate the air in Max's tires. you gotta do that now and again - rotate the air in yer tires, as it can get stale just sittin'.
anyway - we rolled out of the gas station and immediately encountered this '66 Mustang fastback. Nice lookin' 60's rod - shelby tailights, big-assed ET streets stickin' out of the wheel wells, traction bars, headers, 3" exhaust, T-bolt hood...the works.
the item that caught my eye? the license plate...
KAHOONA - as in the big one.
You gotta be pretty confident your car's gonna run when you select a vanity plate like that, methinks.
Max rolls alongside, and we catch a lite. driver's lookin' straight ahead. Lite goes green - we roll out and he gets on it. Not hard but hard enuf to let me know he's willin' to run.
'Stone poker', sez the Peebmonster. 'He wants to run ya'.
mmmkay...
A well-sorted 289 (that's what the fender badges said) is capable of mid 12's in streetable trim; high 11's all-out. Runnin' the K-man would be a crapshoot - Max might take him - but then again he might end up on the losing side.
We catch lite #2; the K-ride starts inching the line as the lite ges yellow. I contemplate a full-on drag launch, but think better of it with the boss in the car. That would freak her out...
Lite goes green - Max and the kahuna roll out about ten feet and hammer down almost simultaneously. the K-rod is friggin' LOUD - and its right alongside Max's door, banging on my left eardrum. thank God that's the ear I'm hard of hearing in!
1st gear comes and goes - so does second. Max and the Kahuna are welded together at the doorhandles. I click off a WOT 2-3 shift as the tach sweeps past 6500 RPM; it's as perfect a shift as I can make. It's good, too...the shift gives Max a fender on the vintage ride...
Traffic ahead - we hafta shut it down.
I give the guy props at the next lite, as he'd got one hella car. He was kinda sheepish about it, tho - I think he was expecting a different outcome; perhaps his kahuna wasn't as big as he thought.
