Ran an 11.30 Cobra.....

Ran my buddy's 03 cobra this past weekend. He is running a ported stock blower, exhaust, intake yadda yadda, on a BFG drag radial. Car made close to 500/500 at the wheels and I at the track he runs 11.3's @ 12x mph. I am running a gutted 2000 formula firebird, tr224, ported stock TB, stock ls1 intake (fast 90 waiting for install), Mac's, ORY, cutout (Kooks and true dual setup waiting to be installed), 9inch rearend, BMR adj. torque arm with relocation crossmember, umi rod ended lca's, ce "drag" shocks on the rear, stock suspension minus swaybar up front, 26x11.5 et streets out back and 15x3.5's up front with moroso ds-2's on.

Anyway I drop tire psi to 16 and do one hilacious burnout (new tires, need to fuzz em up a bit) and roll up to the flagger. Flagger's hands move and I jump the cobra nasty out of the hole, I yank him by a solid car right out of the gates and manage to hold it to the 1/8th mile. From the 1/8th mile on is a different story his HP takes over and he starts coming back up the side of my car and ends up putting a solid car to a car and a half on me in the 1/4th.

Good run, I am a fan of the cobras. Now I just need to get my fast 90 setup on the car along with the kooks and duals and a new "bigger" cam.

Cobras with a pulley change, tune and exhaust can run those numbers. Good run though.

I believe he is still running stock manifolds etc. just a cat back exhaust or whatever you do with those cars. Anywho 11.30's @ mid 120's is a no joke car for very little money invested.

He is adding a valentine icebox to his setup in hopes of getting the car into the 10's.

There are always people who do more with less big slim, look at all the top 4 cam only ls1 cars. All run 10.2's making approx 440-460rwhp. :smt048

Good run!

Cobras don't launch well; the combination of IRS and blower bypass means they can't leave hard and on full boost; most give up a length or so off the line - and then gobble it back up on the big end.

Tell yer buddy with the Cobra that he can prolly turn that 10.9X with a little tweaking - and the addition of a solid axle. The axle will allow him to leave under pressure without wheelhop - that's good for 3-4 tenths, depending on the driver.

The car leaves with a 1.60 sixty foot at the track. We have a couple IRS cars down here that are making the IRS work, somewhat. Although I wouldn't be happy with my 500/500 car only sixty footin' 1.60.

true that on the 60' - My friend Jeff's Mach has 320 at the rear wheels and 60's at 1.56; that's good for an 11.4 inna normally aspirated, stock block Mach. The blown Machs are clickin' 1.4X 60' times with similar HP figures, so there's two tenths right there!

Hey Trigger,
Does your friend have a stock rear end? Or has he had the bushings and the brace etc to help out with the hop? I have quite a bit at the rear wheels also and I can't get a decent 60ft because I have to feather the clutch too much or bog the engine to get any traction. I want to know the best combo for keeping the wheels on the ground. I have 275's on the back now. I'm afraid that launching too hard with my IRS or getting wider tires will break something. Could you find out what he has done to help?

No problem I'll ask him next time I see him.

It's a F/S class car; therefore it's stock from the MAF to the exhaust ports. Jeff's gutted it as it is a race car. Leaves wheels up.

There was a 2 valve shootout recently in one of the Mustang mags; these were streetable non-gutted cars - they ran from a 12.0 to a 12.6. Therefore - a stripped down 4 valver in the mid 11's is not so hard to imagine, methinks.

Back to Trigger's 500/500 car...I was with a buncha racer buddies over the weekend; there was an early F bod with 470 HP on tap that turned a 10.57 at Norwalk a few years back at the Bracket Finals - that's nearly a full second faster than the Cobra. Seems there needs to be some sortin' there.
