383 Magnum Run-in

This is one of my favorite runs fro two reasons: First, I didn't expect to win, and second, I knew exactly how fast the other car was. I'm still kinda sorry I lost - the car has been featured in the Mickey D's at 13 and Woodward! Read on:

Max and I went out for a quick run; a let's-see-what's really-fast-and-race-it run.

I see this yellow '71 Challenger at 13 Mile; it's peelerboy. I loop 'round to catch up and chat. We catch the Chapin lite above 14 mile. After shooting the breeze for a few - lite is green.

We roll off the lite and hit it at about the same time. The run went as follows:

Door-to-door in 1st
Same for most of second, then...
Max started to pull on peeler's Challenger.

This is a 383 magnum with short gears (4.10's?) capable of 12.8's, and Max is slowly rollin' away. I got a good 2-3 shift off and pulled my door handle to Dale's front bumper.

How Max managed that is beyond me. After hitting the brakes, we both looked at each other kinda sheepishly - I don't think either of us expected that outcome.

So - I'm not sure this is a kill story. I feel kinda weird about pullin' on a B block Challenger, especially when he's friend who has timeslips that are a full second shorter than Max's. Seems kinda wrong to kill a legend with a new car, right?

I think you sumed it up in one of your other post. I'm paraphrasing here but it was something to the effect of "a lot can happen on the street." This may just be one of those times, ey? :smt045

I think so. I think, with practice, I can get Max into the 13-teens, which would make him par for the Challenger - more or less. Then the Challenger supposedly had its timing off.

At the end of the run, tho...Max was ahead, and that's what counts.

I had a similar run-in with a guy in a '70 El Camino. White, paint's kinda rough, but he cams like a mutha sitting at the lite. He asked me to run - We did, and I outran him. Enountered him at Lapeer later in the month - he was runnin low 13's before I raced him. After getting beat, he swapped his gears out for shorter ones, and dipped into the 12's.

Hmm...The guy with the Challenger is rebuilding his engine this winter, too. Conicedence?

What happens on the street doesn't always match with the Track
It still comes down putting the power down. :smt025

apparently you dont know the importance of trap speeds, sure the Mopar guy was supposed to run 12s and you (at the time) in the 13's but im willing to bet his 12.8 was with a very similar trap speed as yours, meaning that time was achieved with a better launch. If you he fudged the launch and you kept up (at the launch) then there would be no reason why your car WOULDNT keep up with his.
