Rollin' with a Duce

this is a story from June of this year. I figured I had no chance whatsoever, on account of a go-kart with a motor is usually hard to beat:

Max and I are pacin' this silver Vette on the way home after showin' Peelerboy the new digs last night. I'm dead dog tired, and the 'vette blows the light instead of matching up.

damn.

Out of the corner of my eye I catch bit of yellow pullin' up to the SB Woodward at Big Beaver light - it's a '32 (duce) highboy - yellow with orange flames. I can hear him over Max's glasspacks. Nice.

I'm tired. I'm not challenging vintage iron.

We roll off the light - at about 20 MPH the Duce squirts ahead. I hammer Max at his door - we run side by thru 1st; I take a bit at the shift and slowly pull in 2nd. The racket set off car alarms at the Mercedes dealership. Cool.

We pull up to the Oak light. Husband/wife; late 40's. Very cool and complimentary - we trade props. He's runnin' a 350 with three duces and lakes pipes - all nicely done in the late 50's style. He thinks I'm runnin a 427.

Nope - 281.

Green light.

We run from the bottom of 2nd - Max pulls a half length to third; we get nasty 2-3 rubber which takes a length on the duce.

I didn't expect to win that one - a highboy with a SB chevy is the automotive equivalent of a go-kart - no weight and a big motor. He musta had it geared way down with a mild motor; there's no way Max shoulda hung otherwise. Even so, a Duce with a 350 is a low 13 proposition, so Max did himself proud.

Didn't feel so tired when I pulled into the drive after that.

where do you find these people to race? something must definately be wrong in his head if he really thought you were running a 427. Speaking of 427,that would be an awsome motor to have in a latemodel mustang, easier to work on to boot
