on/off supercharger?
i was thinking late one night, with my limited knowledge of how a supercharger works. if it works liek i think it does, couldnt you add like a door at the top of one, that if it is opened, you would lose your boost, so you could add an air cleaner on it and basically have a normal engine? or am i crazy?
i was thinking you could have a setup where it is switch operated, so you could have a daily driven car, with a supercharger at the touch of a button. that way, you could have better gas milage and longer lasting engine.
if this is a tangable/realistic idea, im trusting you guys not to steal it. or if you do, i want at least 20% kickback in the earnings off this.

They are way ahead of you. The Lightnings and Cobras already recirculate the boost under normal driving conditions so it runs normally. Then when you punch it so the vacuum drops it stops doing that and builds boost normally.

Under normal driving the car is in the vacuum range. The supercharger does not kick in until you hit the go pedal. my car drives like a normal Marauder until you punch it.

i was gunna say clutch driven...but ya beat me to it...and i have no idea who mad max is so uh...yea
but my idea was always a retartedly heavy duty a/c fan clutch on the blower belt so u could go wot w/o boost and engage the blower only when u needed it.

With the Eaton/Ford/Trilogy set up you've got boost if you are at WOT, so I guess if you really wanted to be silly and be able to go WOT with no boost something else would have to be rigged up. Seems like it would be a lot eaier to by pass a turbo. just need a couple eletric cut outs, one between the engine and turbo and one between the filter and turbo. But once again, with a turbo when your cruising you don't have enough exhaust flow to build boost and when you are WOT, that's a lot of extra junk to prevent boost when you should want ti anyway.

Mercedes has a clutched supercharger in the '98ish SLK roadster.. Ended up being retarded (techincally speaking)
Besides, with the bypass valve incorporated in the supercharger there is almost no need to deactivate it because it only drawing MINIMAL power just sitting there spinning.
Now the "Twincharger" on the VW takes it one step further and clutches the supercharger for 'down low' performance and unclutches it when the turbo takes over..
But in terms of efficiency, i highly doubt you will think of anything new that is simple.
There are alot of people working trying to make superchargers better and if you just hold your breath for a short while you will see the fruit of our.. cough.. i mean "thier" labor.

The Eaton on my moms GTP has a valve in it to minimize boost under lite driving. Brian would know more about it since he had one and took it off lol. :smt077

Yup, the recirculation vavle. Allows the blower to draw less than 1hp of parasitic loss under non boosted conditions. You cant really do that with a Screw Type SC due to internal compression... i.e. high parasitic losses no matter what... This is why Blowers are most commonly seen in OEM.. not screws...
