What IS a muscle car?

Seriously...it's a fair question. I mean I know how I define a muscle car...but for the sake of this forum...what is the definition of a muscle car?

my definition varies from this forum i believe...but here it is anyway:

any car that the common person can own without going bankrupt, decently quick from the factory, and a strong aftermarket with relatively inexpensive parts.

yes i consider the evo/sti/srt4 a muscle car

Yeah, see I have to agree with you. The typical muscle car is an 8cyl, rear wheel drive, can empty your wallet in a minute kind of car.

I have been looking seriously at the supercharged grand prix. In my eyes that would have to come close to qualifying as a muscle car. It at least has the potential to be anyway. Even if it is missing 2 cyls and a driveshaft! :smt023

2 doors, rear wheel drive, V8, and comfortable for only 2 people, rear set is very small if even there :smt025 ...oh wait thats a f-body...you want a muscle car?

I guess there is different versions of muscle cars that varry by generations.

I guess it mostly started at the end of the Depression where men began tinkering with car to make them faster (trapped about 100mph) in southern California(1930's). So 1930's hotrods we not much more then tinkered with regualar cars

With building their hotrods they needed to designate a distance which is where the 1/4 mile came from...the salt flats (1950's)...most cars there were stripped used to be everyday cars, tricked origional or swapped motor, gutted, and chopped...those would be the muscle cars of the 1940's-1950's

As the demand for powerfull cars became more evident to the car builders they decided to offer cars with more power to the public. from the 1950's to the 1960's there was the impala, the 300, and the fairlane...some of the first factory muscle cars built in detroit. Basically bigger engine (300-400ci) in a regular car.

Now what everone thinks of when they hear the word muscle car...the greatest period of muscle car history 1960-1975. This is where muscle cars were factory built, (relativily) smaller lighter cars with bigger engines at a price everyone could afford. I guess this is the day where there was no replacement for displacement. cars such as the Riviera, Chevelle, Camaro, Charger, Firebird, Monte Carlo, impala, Nova, Dart, Mustang, 4-4-2, Cuda, and the famed GTO...

This concept was still held through 1990 but lost some popularity. Stangs, F-bodies, Vettes, and few others made it. Same basic concept...muscle car was a affordable decently light weight car with a big engine...

from 1990-now cars became more popular as body styles changed and technology followed...Along with this at the end Asian cars began to hit the the roads along with the long used Turbos became more popular...turbo version of Trans Am as an example...Obviosly there was much arguement on what a muscle car was. My personal thought during this time was a car built for speed and performance from the factory at a decent price...obviously as long as it put out power # of cylinders didnt matter...

1950-1960

1960-1975

1990-now

***this is just a quick summary of my thoughts lol...had to write a report on this so yea i have thought about it...these are my opinions so not everyone has to agree :smt023 ***

A car that has the look of Muscle. A powerfull engine and sound that backs it up! Not one foreign car has the sound of a Mustang. Hands down, Mustang has to be the best sound I've ever heard from any car!!! Also, the big tires in back and the small ones in back looks bad ass! Also, the backend up in the air and the front lowered looks sweet on muscle cars, no other car.

I'd rather have a Mustang, Camaro, Trans Am, and a Lightning than some over priced foreign exotic car. But, hey that's just me )%(

looks good, goes fast, has a sense of intimidation, and heritage! heritage and history are key ingredients. cars that were brought out for 4-5 years were capable of being fast are ok, wth exception to GN's and a few others. i dunno my sense of a muscle car is very particular. neons, civics, or something that can fall into that category CAN have muscle but by no means at all does it fall into the category of muscle car. the term muscle car can be dated way back. the term carries alot of weight.
