T56 into 82 camaro experiance required
I am looking at putting a T56 in my 82 Camaro. wondering what they are worth over there, and if anyone can post pictures of there installations! I currently have a Doug nash 5 speed with straight cut gears, magnesium case, dog drive(no syncros), no speedo drive and not for use on the street. But I put it in anyway and after a couple of months had blown 2nd and 4th out of it. couldn't find any replacements and had to make the gears myself. got it all back together again and blew 2nd and reverse out of it. I think the backlash in the dog drives is allowing a shock loading to the gears that can break them, except for reverse, that was just me being an animal!
Also any tricks or problems you had during installation.
Forwarned is forarmed!

well your gonan need a lt1 gear box since the ls1 gear box wont work with gen 1 engines, ID find a used one and go though it, build it with all the viper parts, and enjoy the 6 gears, if it wasnt a daily driver throw some redicules gears in the rear (4.56-4.88)
and some stickes and have a field day

exactly what he said. There are couple minor instances of fabrication you will have to do to get it in. Like the shifter will be three inches rear of the stock position, crossmember relocation.
Ill see if i can dig up a website that i had found that had all the information you needed for a retrofit T56.

Thanx for the replies, I am a toolmaker so modifacations arn't a problem. I didn't realise the viper got different internals, still looking for pic's. Dug out some of my sacrifices to the gods of speed which included 2nd and 4th out of the doug nash. as you can see they are quite big. theres also some 9inch bits, this was the only piece of ford in my car and it kept letting me down. It's now all replaced with strange engineering products. I went through 3 pinions in 2 months, just kept twisting them in half!
Some people say I drive like an animal, But if it won't handle what I want it to do, It must need replacing!

These guys have a great reputation as the leader in T56 builds and parts. A full unit built for about 500-600 hp goes for about $2500 if I remember right but all the info is on their site. Good luck and hope to visit your country some day. :smt023
