well it it starts low at every gear and then gets progressivly through the gear then its the tranny... if it just gets progressivly louder as you speed up then its the rear...

noise changes by what gear your in - tranny
noise changes by what spped your at - rear end

do you have any modifications done to the suspension at all?
like:
-torque arm
-lowering springs
-dropped LCA brackets

or basically anything that could change the pinion angle at all?

Alright if it is a whining noise during acceleration does it continue if you let off the gas and let the car engine brake? if you have a manual take it up to like 4,000 rpm in say 3rd... let off the gas suddenly and let the engine slow it down. Does it still whine? A whine from the rear axle usually points to the gears as the problem...

lets hear some more info

way to check it is easy...put your hand on the output/yoke... and see if you can wiggle it side to side...

although is this a whine or a hum?

is this a consistant noise or does it change or anything between gears?

It's probably pinion bearing. Check to see if the pinion nut is loose or fluid leaking around the seal.
