broken wheel stud
so we drove the 300m to chicago last week....i had just done the brakes(calipers, rotors, pads) and didn't have a torque wrench with me so i just tightened them down decently with my breaker bar......
anyways, we get to our destination and the front passenger side brakes feels and sounds like it's grabbing.....so i take it to a gas station mechanic who was kind enough to test drive it. the 300m's rotors are notorious for warping, so i figured maybe with the heat and driving through chicago i had gotten a bad rotor and it had warped, or maybe one of the lugnuts had come loose(except that there was no "wheel wobble").....the mechanic asked me if i "cut" the rotors, and i said no, i just scuffed them up and put them on. he figured that was my problem, i should have had them cut, and maybe i scuffed them unevenly....even though i've done quite a few brakes before without "cutting" them, it sounded plausible(and at this point the car still had 5 lugnuts)........
so today i finally get around to taking the wheels off, only to discover that i'm down to 4 out of 5 wheel studs :smt017 the rotors and pads look fine, so i took it down the block and across the street to leslie so they can replace the stud......hopefully i just overtightened it?????? why else would it have snapped? maybe uneven tightening led to the brake noise?
oh yeah, and yesterday my wife got into an accident on the same corner of the car in a parking lot....not too much damage, but the fog light screws are ripped out and the front end has some new black paint on it :smt038
