Rear End & Tires = Boom?

I'm looking in to getting some Nittos in the spring and doing a gear swap.

I would like to put in 4.10 gears with a M-6 and Nittos, am I asking for trouble with the 4.10's? :;bu
I have 3.23's right now!
I was also thinking of a rear end cover with the end cap screws in it and I would have the stock axels.

Good, Bad or Ugly?

If you're still using the 10 bolt you could kiss that good bye. With an M6 i would atleast get a 9" rearend. Especially if you have a 383 and stciky tires. Most 10 bolts go bye bye on stock M6 cars.

start savin for a 12-bolt, or 9in. these rears SUCK. i have nittos and a converter, and mine went buh-bye :smt039

i would not get a Girdle. It "could" help someone like me, but with a 383, no way.

We have run a stock 10 bolt for 5 years in my car. BUT it is an auto and you can get away with a little more.

Ask the fat man in the fuzzy red suit for a 12 bolt or 9" you will need it.

From what I have heard on the 4.10's in the stocker...you might wanna start saving your money.

The 4.10's are generally a weaker gear then the stock or even 3.73's....The rear girdle will help alittle to save the stress on the rear, but with the above in mind, dont expect the thing to last very long at all.

Speak up Jay and tell him what happend to yours!!!

i have broken 2 sets of 4.10s on street tires. on the third set i got a ta cover and this set has lasted atleast 3 years with countless passes leaving around 3500-4500 rpms with bfgs and nittos and a spec stage III clutch. i just make sure the driveline has a load on it and i slip the clutch (cant really slip the spec III at all) just enough not to shock the rear too hard. my posi on the other hand is shot :h

There's actually a way to figure this out mathematically using info from the Moser site. If you know your engine's torque at launch speed and the 1st gear ratio, the combination of the 1st gear ratio and the final drive ratio will tell you how much torque is goin' to your axles.

Now for the seat-of-the pants stuff:

Personally, the Ford 8.8 and the GM 10 bolt in a short gear (4.10 or greater) are good for *about* 350 ft/lbs of torque. This assumes DR's or better. Anything more than that and you risk 'sploding the rear on a hard launch.

There are guys who have been successful runnin' a stock rear end simply by reinforcing the carrier - or poppin' in some axle supports, but these are the exceptions. OTOH, there are some damn fools who have grenaded stock rear ends w/stock rubber on account of they 'think' a 5 grand sidestep is the one true way to launch.

The truth is in-between.

Since we're ALWAYS on the hunt for more speed (it's NEVER fast enough) taking the time to beef up the rear end ASAP is always a smart bet. Better to choose when to upgrade than to have to get the car towed 150 miles 'cuz you shot the ring out the ass end up at Stanton - it's cheaper when you do it right the first time! :smt023
