Engine Code Trouble

the check engine light has been on in my 93 lesabre (3.8L V6) for a few days. took it to the shop and all the guy would tell me was it is a code 41. he wrote that it was "code 41 - no cam ref sig" i'm assuming, "no camshaft refrence signal". if any one knows what i need to buy and where it is located on the motor, that would help me greatly. thank you in advance.

Most likely the Cam Position Sensor or it could be the magnet thatg passes by it that is on the camshaft sproket could have come off. The Cam Position Sensor is located on the engine front cover behind the water pump. Hopefully that helps. It is easy to replace too.

41 No distributor signals to ECM, or faulty ignition module
41 Cam sensor or circuit (3.8L)
41 Cylinder select error
41 Quad 4 engine 1X Reference (check ignition module/ECM wiring)
41 Electronic Spark Timing (EST) circuit (Cadillac)
41 Opti-spark Electronic Spark Timing (EST) circuit open or grounded (5.7L "F" and "Y" bodies)

pulled this from a trouble shooting page.
i figure it's this one.
41 Cam sensor or circuit (3.8L)
my mechanic told me that if it was the sensor itself the car wouldn't even start.

first, does the water pump have to come off or is it in a spot where i can replace it w/o removing the w/p?

second, if it's the mag, how can i tell and how do i replace that?

third, any info on the cam circuit (could that be the magnet)?

did u do any work on it recently? or did it just come on all of a suddon, i dont remebr there being a magnet on the wheel....................should be a hall effeect type sensor, generates voltage through the windows on the cam wheel. will the car run with it unpluged. if so fire it up and hook up a analog mulit meter or a scop if ya got one to the sensor see if your getting a pattern if your getting a patern the snesors ok u proabaly have a wiring issue.

my mechanic friend told me that the sensor the guy at advanced gave me would keep the car from starting. there were two choices, the cam sensor itself (about $25) or another cam sensor thing (about the same $). it actually came on a while ago. it would make the car lope, stutter, when you lightly press on the gas, after the car had warmed up. if i turned the car off for about 10-20 secs it would turn off and be fine.

than it turned off for about a month or so. came back on the other day and goes off for a sec here and there. can't use the "turn off the car trick now" and it's on even when the car is cold. gotta get it inspected this month so i wanna try and fix it first. thought about takin the bulbs outta the gauge (abs light is on too), not sure if they do a dummy light check tho. if ya could tell me exactly how to take the sensor out, i'll buy the cam sensor and replace it to see if its that or the other sensor part. thanx

reminds me of the time we convinced my buddy that adding a muffler bearing to his neon rice wannabe. He went up to pepboys and asked them for one, they said they had one but they would have to order it and it would be so and so much dollars. He decided not to buy a muffler bearing. Thank god for pepboys unknowingly playing along.

Same kid also believed us when we told him about high performance turn signal fluid.
