1986 Iroc

Hey Guys Im in Iraq right nwo but before I left I bought a 86' Iroc with a 350 Vortec and Vortec Trans.
It has a quadra jet carb and normal headers. I know I need to buy Vortec heads and Im also buying a Edlebrock RPM Intake, and some mroe goodies.

I wanted peoples input on the best carb, distr. and anything else it may need to be a beast.

Im new to the muscle trend because, Ive only owned Tuners.

Thanks for any help.

nice to see a fellow soldier in here. i am in afghanistan right now but anyways if you are looking for a good carb then you need to go with holly. they are the best. headers i would suggest hooker headers. also if you are wanting to make some nice horsepower then you can buy a stroker kit to make it a 383 or 396 stroker and at the same time you can send in your block to have it refinished and bored .20 or .30 over and that will be putting out some much more serious horsepower than just the stock 350. you will also have to dump some money into the trans to be able to put the power onto the ground. and one area that a lot of people dont give any attention to is the suspension and chassis. if your car can not stick to the ground when you take off then all the horsepower in the world will do you no good. and you will prolly have to put some money into you rear end. you can get a 12 bolt moiser for about 1500 or 1700 new so you dont tear out your back end if your putting down some serious power.

I agree with 1okiez28. You can just build the 350 amd make it run great but you can bore it out .30 over put a 400 crank in it and build a 383 stroker. Holley carb would be a great choice. As you said you will need a good sized cam, a better set of heads, a good high rise intake, I would go with a Msd distributor and plug wires. Hooker headers are awesome. A good 3" exhaust system will help out tremendously. And yes you will need a stronger tranny and rearend to handle the power.

For a carb, Go with a Holley 600 - 650 cfm the double pumper, WARNING: hollies are very tempemental, you can basically adjust everything, you can fart beside your car and have to readjust something, if this sounds like too much hassle then go w/ an eldebrock theres my $0.02

forgot to mention 3.73 or 4.11 gears another good cheap exhaust job is the hooker longtubed headers w/ 3" purple hornies bolted straight to the headers :smt023

yes that doesn't matter. 383 or 396 stroker will be soo much better than a 350 vtec. and i also agree about the msd distributer and wires. msd is pretty much top in ignition systems. if you are going to go with a 4speed auto tranny then i would suggest 3.73 in the rear end so as not to loose top speed and hiway pull. if you put a t-56 six speed then i would go with 4.11 in it because you will not loose any top speed or hiway milage because that is a double overdrive tranny and you will actually still be able to have some pull through 5th and even a little left in 6th. that is what i have in my z28. and if you are able to switch to 4.11 it will fell like you just put another 50hp into your car. that is how much those gears will make a differance. and like i said dont get too hung up on the whole vortech thing. that 350 vortech wont touch a 383 or 396 stroker bored over .30. even if you have everything else the same( tranny, rearend, exhaust, headers, ect...) and while your at it if you do decide to stay with the 350 then i would get the heads refinished and ported out. but this is all just my $0.02

That Sounds cool. Isnt a 396 a big block though? When you buy a 383 kit or 396 kit, what is in this kit that makes a diff?
