1989 Chevy Silverado

does anyone know where i can find information on a motor that came out of a 1989 chevy silverado it is a GM 5.7LG SGI motor that has a 2 bolt main, center bolt valve covers and is TBI fed. It has a casting number of 14093638. what is the LG SGI mean?

I would like to know if this is a decent motor, how many HP is it suposed to have stock, and what is the best way to produce 350-400hp.

sounds like a TPI 350... check out the heads... they are probably different then the f-body TPI 350's ... to get 400 your going to need a decent set of heads and a cam

the the heads have a center bolt valve cover,i have never seen this before i have to admit it looks very clean, the last vehicle i put a motor in was a 1979 camaro Z28 with a carberated 350. I don't know what TPI is, I took the 89 down to a bare block yesterday and found a hair line crack on the exterior between 4 and 6 cylenders. Ihave a place here in town that has the same block # of 638 but does anyone know if this is a comon problem should I get a differant block #. And I have heard of people fixing this problem with J/B weld is this a long lasting quick fix?

what do you want to put this engine in? from an 89 truck it's an EFI block which means it's a 1 piece rear main seal, hydraulic roller block(the trucks are usually hyd flat tappet but the block accepts factory hyd roller equipment which mean you don't have to get a retro-fit cam and lifters for a lot more money) and I believe it has PM(powdered metal) connecting rods, which are good.

The heads, from 87-95 have the center intake manifold bolt holes canted. The TBI(throttle body injection) is pretty poor for performance. Do you want to carb it or what? GM and Edelbrock have carb intakes that you can bolt onto the 87-95 truck heads.

If the block was cracked, the heads probably are or are about to, in which case you'd be better off buying a set of Vortec heads and get an intake for it.
And I wouldn't JB weld the block, 350 blocks are too easy to find and that is not at all a permanent fix.

THE MOST POWER

IN TRUCKS YOU WANT TORQUE, NOT HORSEPOWER. 450 FT LBS OF TORQUE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE HEADS ON THAT BLOCK IS LOCATED IN THE EXHAUST BOWLS, THESE HEADS ARE RESTRICTED. LOKK FOR A SET OF AN 89 TA OR CAMARO WITH A 350. THEY ARE 64CC AND HAVE 1 94'S AND 1 5'S EXHAUST. YOU CAN PUT LARGER VALVES IN THEM WITH EASE. YOU SHOULD BUILD A 383 STROKER. I HAVE A CUSTOMER WITH A 92 CHEVEY 4X4 EXTENED CAB LONG BED WITH THE FACTORY T-BODY THAT RUNS 14 40'S. IF THAT AINT GETTIN IT THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT WILL. YOU CAN BUILD A COMPUTER FIENDLY ENGINE AND STILL RUN DOWN MUSTANGS AND OLDER CAMARO'S. A GOOD BUDGET STROKER CAN BE BUILT FOR ABOUT $2500.
