Its a combo of teeth to the ring gear and the pinion gear... if you added to many teeth too one gear then it would become extremely weak. So basically its an even amount that adds up to be the 3.73 ratio
Here are some examples of ratios

Pinion Gear teeth count:Ring Gear teeth count

3.73 ratio
19:71
15:56
12:45

3.55 ratio
19:67.5
15:53
12: 24.5

but yes you will see a huge change in your 60ft times

if its a manual car, i would go to 4:11's that thing will wake up like crazy, but 373s are good none the less
no way... 4.11s on a stang manual with a 8.8 rear will be shittttttty... 3.73 is the way to go.. economical cause you wont lose crazy mileage.. and you can still go above 120 MPH if you want...

lol from 2.73s to 3.73s you should pick up almost a 1 second in the 1/4 and as jerry said your 60s will be really nice.. that is if u can hook up.. lemme ask you.. do you got a posi rear end?

If you use FMS Gears then you can install them yourself and get away with setting backlash. There are a few write-ups floating about the web, I know I have at least one bookmarked at home.... I'll try to post a link later. But from what I remember the crush sleeve is my biggest worry.

My buddies Stang has 4.10s (he was told the rear had 3.73s, lol) with a T-5. It's not as bad on the highway as my Bird w/ C-4 and 3.08s but first gear was almost pointless.

just put the 4.10 in it. if your worried about driving on the x-way just run a little taller tire. i used to drive mine from chicago to st. louis (5-spd)every year for the world for challenge and i managed 19mpg cruising 80 the whole way there.

looking back i wouldve gone from my stock 3.08 right to the 4.10 and never bothered to waste the time with the 3.73.

just my $.02

If you only drive occasionally on the highway I'd go with the 4.10s. Personally I only recommend 3.73s if you're planning on or already have a blower but that's just my opinion.
