engines making weird noise

hello, i have a 2001 mustang gt. it recently started making a weird clicking noise in the engine, i think from the intake manifold (which also seems to be shaking quite a bit, i dont know if it's suppossed to). i think it might be from driving through a puddle. does anyone know what it could possibly be and if there is anywhere around farmington hills that is good with mustangs and not too expensive? thanks for any help.

Engines canmake the dangdest noises....If the intake manifold is moving differnt from the engine, something is wrong. They should move together.....What is your vacuum reading?

All i can say is that It might be something to do with the puddle you went through..

Just saying cause when I washed the engine in my winter beater (Ford ProbeGT) it ran quite rough. I ended up replacing the TPS (Throttle Posision Sensor) and the car ran great.

Good luck!!!

BTW...I usually do not recommend Livernois racing to anyone, but in my opinon, Mustangs are about the only thing they are decent at doing work to.

Umm...I have a mustang, and I don't recommend them - period.

If you want, PM and I'll try to diagnose the problem for you. The trick is to use a mechanic's stethescope to isolate the source of the noise. Mod motors are famous for excessive valvetrain noise, but the combination of things mentioned makes it soind like somthing else.

The easiest thing to 'fix' is to let the engine dry out completely and see if the prob does not disaapear. OTOH, if the puddle was big enough...

I was out in Oklahoma drivin' around inna company Crown Vic (same motor as yours) when I got caught inna flash flood. Never seen anything like it - they got several INCHES of rain in a 20 minute period. Stand under a bucket-dump the water on ya - you get the idea. I was drivin' the Vic thru a small lake that usedta be a town when I pushed it a bit too fast and the standing wave collapsed on the hood - I'd been 'pushing' the water outta the way.

The wave got sucked into the motor - it stopped immediately...

Water is a non-compressible fluid. When it gets into a space used to compressing stuff - it acts as a wheel chock; stops the works cold. Did not blow the motor (thank GOD) 'cuz I was runnin' just above idle. If I had been going just a teeny bit faster - I woulda blown head gaskets.

Here's how the rest of the day went:

1st 20 minutes - motor would not roll over; too much water in the cylinders.

2nd 20 minutes - after many attempts, the motor turned but would not fire.

3rd 20 minutes - every now and then - a cylinder would fire.

2nd hour - got the motor to run - but only at idle on about four cylinders

3rd hour - picked up a fifth cylinder, and started back to OKC.

4th hour - added 6th, 7th, and 8th, cylinders. Idler bearing on serp drive starts to howl.

Got it back to the office, told them what happened. They had the oil changed and the idler, the car is still in the fleet.

Well the mod motors do have the ticking issue with the back of the passanger side heads...but that almost only on the DOHC motors not the SOHC ones

Umm...

It's not the passenger side - it's the driver's side on R code motors.

PS. I've had some Mustangs and I do recommend them. Period.

Anybody can have any problem with any car. If you like your car, well then, you like your car. If not, well then you don't. It's up to you as an owner to decide what is right for you.

Umm...

I live here. There are better mustang shops in town than Livernois.

Last time I used them, they totally bunged up what I needed; their customer support flat sucks compared to other shops. The only way they listen to you is when you wave thousand dollar bills at the counter - other than that, you're an annoyance.

If you can't get the little things right - why would I commit the big bux?

I don't recommend them. Period.

PS - I 've had over 35 cars; crewed on a record-breaking land speed record team. Have worked dynos over at McLaren, GM and Ford.

OK, well I can understand issues with a particular shop/vendor. I just woldn't condemn a particular make/model because of disappointments from a shop/vendor.

I thought you were condemning the Mustang not a shop.

I'm just a lowly engine guy who has produced some 7 second naturally aspirated small block door slammer engines and some pretty stout Outlaw Pro Street and Real Street engines...and now a Hot Street engine...plus I've got an international deal going now that I will provide info on, once some records are posted.
