1967 Mustang, want input on engine options???
Hey guys, I'm gonna be pulling my lil 289 out of my '67 pretty soon here, and I want to go with something that'll really make her dance when I say giddy up. Something more to the tune of say about 400+bhp N/A? Any opinions, tips, or engine suggestions? I'm really thinking of going with some kind of stroker motor, but I'm not really sure what I wanna do engine wise. I want something that's really gonna make some power, but at the same time be able to run on pump gas. Any and all input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

I'm doing a '66 Comet and it had a 289 2V with a C4 auto. I found a 302 out of an '88 stang with the 5spd for $200.00. I converting the fuelly back to carb and the engine builder figures about 350HP and 350Ftlbs of Torque.
basically the 302 will give me the same profile as the 289, so suspension and braking and overall fit is the same.
the engine builder has bored .030, new pistons, balanced the crank and connecting rods, World Comp heads, an edelbrock airgap performer intake, pertornix flamethrower distributor and on top a holly 650 double pump carb. should be a little bit of fun....
that's what i'm doing, it is going to cost a bit of dough but it will be reliable and fun. and that's what i wanted....
some guys will talk about BB, but then you fight with headers, engine and tranny mounts, is the rad going to keep it cool....
whatever you do, it looks like a nice car...
have fun

If you need any stuff for your mustang, I found AutoKrafters ( www.autokrafters.com) to be a great resource for some of the bits and pieces that would typically be a pain to find... my only word of caution, is that with both orders i have placed, an item or two has been backordered and has delayed the shipment. Now, what I will say on a positive note, is that the folks there are aware of this and will call or email you to ask for your direction (send now and pay two shipping fees or wait for the B/O item to dcome in). in my situations, because i am in canada, i have elected to wait.
when the stuff comes, it is top notch... i bought a kit for my comet that had all of the rubber pieces included some that you might not notice right away... so in one easy part number, i got all of the rubber, including window felts, trunk seal, glass rubber, etc... all at a reasonable price.
good luck...

Stroke a 351w to the max. There are kits available that will help you get 454 CID out of the little block. Makes good power, havn't heard how long they last, but have seen them available.

Exactly the point. Dont' know how long motors like that last - but it can be done. Do you want to rebuild a motor every year? every two years or go with trusted technology like a 390 or 460?
Any motor will fit, but do you want to hvae to pull your motor half way out to change the plugs? A 390 is tight to get to the plugs.
What do you want out of the car? and how often do you want to break stuff?

excatly my point as well, i know from my own experience that there is a lot of $$ that go into building up both a fast motor and a reliable one. the other point i was trying to make was that if the car came with a 289 to begin with, a 302 is a direct bolt in and there are tons of parts and things you can do to a 302.
personally, I want to forget about the motor, once it has been bolted in and setup. i want it to be as relaible as my daily driver (get in it, turn the key, and drive it).
