CAI....

Has anyone here noticed a difference after installing a CAI? If so, what kind of difference and how much horse did it add? Did it change the sound of your car in any way?

I modded my intake to let more air in and it made a lil differnce I could not be more then 5-10rwhp. I had some one rev it up while i was outside of the car near the hood and i could hear it sucking in air but with the loudmouths on that was the only time I have heard it make noise.

my first car, a '92 cavalier with a 3.1 L litre, had a cold air i installed. it didnt really add any high end power, but for a 140K mile old v6 this thing could really smoke the wheels! :))bo

FYI, the longer it takes for the air to reach your engine, the more torque you make, and the shorter the air travels the more HP you get. that is why my cav could smoke the wheels, the cai i had on it was almost 3 ft. long, right out the bottom of the car(bad idea)

the filter i had on recently fell off with a run in with a speed bump.
and the engine niose on every car is different. with my cav, you could barely hear it, but my freind did the same thing to his 3.0 L lebaron ( don't even ask) and you can hear his intake from freakin mile away.

Also the less bends the better , if you can get a straight shot to say the fender to pull in nice cold air go that route. You'll want a location that wont get soaked when its wet out of course. Open cones in the engine bay will pull hotter air then the stock box most of the time. I made a CAI on my old car..did some IAT test and went with what i thought would work best.

lenght of the pipe before the throttle body should have little to no effect on hp or torque. lenght of the runners affect torque hence why tpi cars are so torquey with intake long runners and 6 inchs of intake tube

Cai is deseined to bring in cooler air to the engien then the hot under hood air. On a dyno you will generaly not see an improvement when your moving and have cooler outside air going into the enegine you will have more power, cooler air is more dense there for you have more air going into the engine and there for more power (laymans terms) the other thing a cai does for you is it removes the factory baffles and restrictions that casue turbelence and restricition that were designed to cut down on noise but also reduce power .

all very helpful information guys, thanks....It seems to be working in my favor so far. I just need to get rid of the big factory tube and get a chrome pipe.
