Blown 306 or 347 Stroker

I have become undecided about my future engine. I want power, but Im not sure what form I want it in. I like the Idea of having a blown engine, so I could claim my bird to be a Supercoupe. but a blown 347 would be TO much for what im after. I was thinking a blown 306, or even a blown rebuilt 302. what do you guys think?? :mmm

If you are going to drive the car on the street I would recamend the 306 rather than the 347. due to the better drivability of the 306.

I still like the 2.3 turbo. I've a few of them pushing 500 hp at the wheels and running 11's. There was a story in 5.0 Mustang where the took a turbo mustang and swaped the turbo for a bigger unit and put down over 400 hp at the wheels.

being stroked is great but I would rather be blown.
FI cars are btter around town and more streetable, until you get into boost and it gets unleash like the gates of hell

Either way you'll be fine on the street, especially if you're planning on boosting. Due to that, you'll have to run a lower compression ratio, so both should be great street engines.

What mods do you plan to make and what is your horsepower goal?

If you're gonna rebuild the 302, at least bore it to a 306. No sense putting in stock replacement pistons/rods in there when you have it all apart and the relatively inexpensiveness (real word?) of a 306.

You can have a pretty fast engine on a budget if you go with a 306 and some iron GT-40s or GT-40Ps. Those heads with the right cam and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake can get you 300 RWHP N/A! I think people underrate these heads because they can make some great power for the cheap price they are.

BTW, are you staying EFI or going carb?

ok ill just state my goals now...

Id like to make atleast 350 horse with 380 torque If i can get that with a 306 without boost then that would be great cuz im on a budget. my main goal is to have a somewhat of a sleeper since thunderbirds are so heavy nobody really takes me seriously. I would like to smoke Mustang GTs and Z28s but since im on a small budget that would be a bonus. I was plannin on puttin some 347 badges on the cowl, but if i dont get one then ill have to get 306 emblems... do they even make those?

Not sure about the badges.

So 350 HP/380 TQ. That should be feasible if you're talkin' at the flywheel. Those iron GT-40s I was talking about can put you there. Here's some more info on 300RWHP with GT-40Ps: click here You actually need 305 RWHP to hit 350 flywheel and that's probably if you have a stick. General rule of thumb for HP loss through drivetrain is 15% with a stick and 20% with an auto. So, I'm pretty sure you got an AOD with your Bird, so a looser converter should do ya well. Have one made as per your cam specs.

You'll have to add a little things to them GT-40Ps to hit 300 at the wheels. Stuff like proper ratio rockers, springs, valves, retainers, etc. But it should all tell you in that thread I posted, if you're interested. Even if you went with aluminum heads, such as AFR 165s or some TFS Twisted Wedges, you probably wouldn't be right at 300 to the wheels. Usually when people put those heads on their stock shortblocks (along with a cam and intake), they usually put down 270-290 at the wheels, and they cost you over $1000/set. Keep us posted.
