Dammit!
So here's the deal:
I do work for the auto industry (duh) and one of our larger clients is GM. Back in '03, they didn't award a program to us - so I got ticked and turned in my Caddy for the Max the Mach.
Since then, GM has seen the error of their ways and is considering using us again on a new program. I've promised them that if they award it to us, I'd sell Max the Mach and get a GM replacement.
Problem is - I like Max.
Went out and drove the following:
Corvette
GTO
CTSV
as replacements, and while they're nice, they're not Max. the GTO is the cheapest of the bunch at 29K after discounts. It's quick - but the styling is old-ish, and I'm not sure the resale will be there when I tire of it.
Next up was the CTSV - niice. Every option known to man, and it's quiet and refined. Clutch engages like a 4 cylinder - it's that light! Prob is - the car is 48K after discounts, and is somewhat low on power. The bugger needs a Mangusson blower, which adds another 10K to the sticker - if I want to retain factory warranties.
Finally - the 'vette. I REALLY like the vette, but they're sold out - and there's no discount available. The Z06 is changing hands for nearly 90K - if you can find one.
this sucks.

Buy a nice used C5 Z06
I love th e 96 GS for sure, rare and they are affordable (for a Corvette).
CTSV is a good choice too, depends how deep those pockets are :D
In the other hand, I comend you for your dedication, but remember that company would drop you faster then a hot potato. There is ZERO company loyalty any more :(

thanks for the sugestions, guys! :smt023
1) I can't buy a used car - I have to go new so that they may track the purchase and take credit for it to their superiors. I tried the used route when we bought the Mothership ('95 Buick Roadmaster wagon) and got no props for the used rig - altho they'd prolly smack me for showin' up in the lot with a used twin turbo Supra...
2) '96 GS's aren't any faster than a regular '96. I investigated that route B4 buying Max and wasn't happy with the power, the ergonomics - or the rattles. I even considered a ZR-1, but the 80's interior is too Flock of Seagulls for me.
3) As for loyalty...
I believe in not shitting on yer dinner plate, and that's not gonna change. We're preferred ford suppliers, too, so the Mustang is okay from that perspective. Prob is, I made a promise to the GM folks that if this project came our way - I'd buy GM. I have to make good on that...even tho I'd rather not.
4) As for keepin' Max...
I'd like to, but the stuff I'd replace him with costs $$$ at a time when I'm conserving $$ for kids college. Can I afford it? yah. Do I wanna part with the $$$ - not really.
Maybe I'll buy an Aveo and dub it out.
