I read that article as well. When filming the movie, the stunt cars they used to actually do the drifting were all equipped with Big Block V8's. They only used the Skyline engine for picture purposes. Goes to show that good 'ol American Muscle wins again!

p.s. If I ever saw anyone with a coffee can on a classic like that, I would slap them
