are they selling GT500s?
i forgot all about this for a while, but when i was commuting to wyandotte, i saw a grey mustang convertable, with light grey racing stripes. nothing too special, custom paint on a new mustang.
i looked closer and saw the cobra on the drivers side grill. was this a replica, or a GT500? or am i missing something and there be another option?

What you probably saw was a manufactor's car. Ford has had them on the street for a while. A guy I work with put his order in on his two weeks ago. He got a letter from Ford telling him to do so by June 1st. He had an 04' Cobra so he was one of the first on the list to order a GT500.

They aren't for sale yet, and there are also pre-production build cars running around in colors that aren't actually going to be options when they go on sale from what I have seen from info on the official options.

Weight reduction to lose 700 lbs? Get out the drill, the whole saw, and I hope you don't care how the car looks when you're done.
