A guy I auto x'd with in Nebraska ran the open road rallies like the Silver State Challenge. He won the 140 MPH class (target average speed for the course is 140 MPH, closest to it wins) there one year. There was another guy in Lincoln that had a Camaro that ran the open class (fastest through the course wins). I guess the open class cars have lots of tire problems because there aren't any tires that can withstand those speeds on cars heavier than indy cars, with wheels that will clear the brakes they run (NASCAR uses 15" wheels), for that amount of time, their course averages are 190+. The guy I auto x'ed with showed me some pictures of this corvair that had a tire delaminate at the end of a long straight. The car was demolished. Went off the road, hit the ditch, sent the car flying into the air, it landed vertically on the rear crushing that before it started flipping/rolling finally coming to a stop so far from the road that you could barely see the road in the distance of the pictures of the wreckage.
It would be a lot of fun to do that kind of stuff still though. Someday I'll have something up to the task.
