it just seems to me like 12000 is a very fine grit number.
I thought the highest cloth backed material before getting into a compoound was 1200. Cuz 3000 compound is for polishing after wetsanding.

It's mostly used in furniture to get a high sheen on lacquer. I've used it on metal and it works awesome before buffing. Gives metal very high glass chrome shine.

Ok, i have no experience with furniture stuff..
But generally with metal and/or paint, the polishing compounds get out anything above a 1500-2000 grit.
Like my valvecovers, i only sanded them to 1000 or so and the buffer and compound gets those out.
And with automotive paint, using rubbing compound with a powered polisher (professional type.. not walmart) it gets out anything above 1200 grit. and makes it perfectly smooth.

If its auto paint...
320 the primer
1200 the clear and be VERY VERY VERY GENTLE, only removing that peel.
3000 pro polishing compound with a professional variable speed buffer.
Boom, gloss shine so nice!
