41 No distributor signals to ECM, or faulty ignition module

pulled this from a trouble shooting page.
i figure it's this one.
41 Cam sensor or circuit (3.8L)
my mechanic told me that if it was the sensor itself the car wouldn't even start.
first, does the water pump have to come off or is it in a spot where i can replace it w/o removing the w/p?
second, if it's the mag, how can i tell and how do i replace that?
third, any info on the cam circuit (could that be the magnet)?
