Yes `67 was the debut of the Firebird
And Yes the Trans Am debuted was in `69 so the `79 is the 10th Anni. and so on and so forth.
Yes it was named after a Race series that it didn't Originally Compete in. (Pontiac built 17 303 ci Trans Am's in `69 that were sold as Race Cars these Cars had no Vin and were not part the original 697)
the 303 tunnel port engine never made enough power to be competitive.
Pontiac paid The SCCA $5 to use the name for every Trans Am that rolled off the assembly line `69-`02 (turned out to be a sweet deal for the SCCA)
Some T/A's were run with 302 chevy's in `69 with limited success.
In 1970 they changed the displacement rule so Trans Ams did compete, Again with limited success.
